Wondering why men’s fashion is so important these days? In addition to the general need to look good, fashion helps you express yourself better. Of course, they must have the ease and confidence to carry it off, or they’d be fashion disasters! Their flexibility is what sets them apart, and makes it easy for them to shift from one style to another be it casual, rugged or formal without being under or over dressed, and makes for a refreshing twist on prevailing fashions.

In the 1960s, fashion really kicked off with the introduction to many new and diverse trends. You can easy determine trends from the early, middle and end of the decade. Traditional, conforming man’s attire was lost due to social changes. Throughout the 60s, the focal point in fashion was the uprising of bright colors and tones. The changes in the fashion of this time were more so than any other time previous. This renaissance in fashion was influenced heavily by Italian designers and by the Modernist, Hippie and Edwardian styles of dress.

The British & the Modernist Movement

At the forefront of style in the 60s were the British. The modernist movement came about at the beginning of the era, allowing young men to push boundaries and make way for the many new trends that would follow. It was all about moving away from the ‘lack of style’ in the 50s and experimenting with psychedelic prints and gregarious patterns. No man wanted to be seen in dull and pale shades. No! It was time to add color and plenty of it, the brighter and more flamboyant the better. It wasn’t uncommon to see frills and cravats on a man’s shirt. Even neckties enjoyed their rebirth, from the skinny tie at the beginning of the 60s to the very wide ties in the Hippie age, all adorned with unusual prints, stripes and patterns.

The Mods versus the Rockers

If you lived the 60s, you were probably a Mod at one stage, and if you weren’t, you were a Rocker. The two were notorious rivals. The Rockers were heavily into 50s rock-and roll, big bikes like the Harley Davidson, leather jackets and ‘Elvis’ greased back hairstyles. The Mods were classier, listening to British bands such as The Beatles. They preferred Vespers over Harleys and took their trends from respectable French and Italian clothes designers. Most commonly, tailored suits with slim shirts, pants and skinny ties slimmed down to just an inch. The Modernists also brought us the anorak, an item of clothing regarded as their trademark.

The Edwardian Movement

A bit further down the line, specifically the year of 1966, men embraced the Edwardian movement. Double-breasted suits in velvet were worn by men following icons such as Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. These suits were accompanied with brocade waistcoats, shirts with frilled collars and longer hair as opposed to the previous shorter styles. All variations of colors, stripes and patterns were evident in this so-called ‘dandified’ look. The Nehru jacket also came about in this time and was popular with both men and women.

Mad Men is not only a phenomona on AMC, the wonderful vintage narrow ties exhibited on the show have become a major trend in men’s fashion. The Mad Men television show happens in the early 60’s when narrow ties were at their hight. Finding a Vintage Narrow Necktie

Vintage clothes stores are a great place to look for vintage ties. For vintage inspired looks, several fashion designers have offered styles inspired by Mad Men. Among them is fashion designer Michael Kors who has created an early 60s inspired line. Classic ties from the era can be bought on the web as well. Narrow ties direct from the 1950’s and 1960’s can be found with a google search.

Wearing suit jackets with shorts rather than trousers – honestly speaking this trend just blows my mind away as I can not quite comprehend the logic behind this fashion stunt. The shocking thing is that this style has found its way into numerous designer collections.

It makes sense if you live in Bermuda and if you’re a school boy donning the same, no problem because it looks cute, but for adults it’s a totally a different story. A friend of mine who’s also an executive of a major corporation told me that one of his company employees reported to work once clad in a similar outfit and nobody knew quite well what to make of it.

What of skin tight peg-leg pants?

Well, I personally own a couple of skinny jeans but what do you make of the skinny tight type and here I mean those that are tight all the way down to the ankles, not cool on men! Those types are not only uncomfortable but really out of place, maybe you can save them for the night out with the boys, but even then you might just end up looking like an alien straight out of Star Trek.

I saw these ones for the first time when Kanye West wore them during the 2008 Grammys performance and they looked good for showbiz and nothing more, getting creative and extending their use is just looking for disaster.

Them Crocs

I was very ignorant about crocs until my sister unveiled them. About a year ago she wore them a lot and especially when vacationing with her family in Hawaii, and in her opinion they make a perfect beach shoe, I guess because of the little holes that allow water to flow freely between the toes. She bought them in Waikiki Hawaii and then returned with all her family members wearing them. To my astonishment, lots many people adopted the style and soon you could see all folks comfortable in them around town, in gardens and while doing many other casual activities. They may have some appeal but wearing them around town? Not cool

Belted coats and Jackets

One blogger recently wrote “The main reason for having a belt on a coat or a jacket that already has a button or a zipper is to add waistline definition. In my view men don’t need to worry about highlighting their curves.” Well, that’s perfectly put and I fully agree with the sentiments of that blogger. The only exception is safari jackets which remind me of the British Colonial period.

The 80s hair style

History indeed repeats itself and hair styles a re a witness to that. Big hair a hot style of the 80’s and mostly for the male folk, and in my humble opinion it should have been left to rest with the 80’s but no. When contemporary fashion designers started to introduce fashions that were said to be inspired by the new wave era, I hoped that it was gonna be a pure fad. What happened was the exact opposite and the whole 80 thing sprung back in full force, I was dumbfounded and confused. Some things should just be left to the past for Christ’s sake.
